Temporal Discussion is a fortnightly, episode-by-episode Knightmare retrospective podcast. It is hosted by Martin Harder (who is also known as the co-creator of the
Knightmare Roleplay Game) and Martin Odoni (
HStorm on the Knightmare forums), who refer to themselves as "The Two Knightmartins". A trailer for the podcast was published through the podcast hosting service Anchor on September 29th 2020, with the first full episode published on October 9th the same year.
The podcast originally stemmed from Martin H's desire to host a podcast based on a Facebook page and YouTube channel he co-admins, The Broom Cupboard Club:
"The original plan was to focus on a different nostalgic kid's show each episode. The problem was that, whilst lots of people supported the idea, none of the other admins wanted to host. Then I heard
Under Consoletation: The GamesMaster Podcast , and I had the idea to do something similar with Knightmare. I messaged the guys at UCP over Twitter and pretty much said 'Love the format, can I use it?', and they loved the idea. Then Martin O came on board and it all just fell into place. It was him that came up with the name 'Temporal Discussion'".
Originally a weekly podcast throughout series 1, it was changed to a fortnightly release from series 2 onward. This was due to Martin H having to 'rush' editing in order to accommodate his career, leading to what he believed were episodes that "consistently failed to be the best that they could be". Martin H often refers to the dynamic between himself and his co-host Martin O as "a Kermode and Mayo situation, with him as the expert and me doing my best to keep things on track".
The podcast often features special guests, including former contestants and cast members, as well as other prominent fans of the series. The first episode of series 3 featured
Hugo Myatt as a guest host, an experience that Martin O described as "genuinely one of the greatest moments of my life".
During breaks between series, and occasional "mid-series specials", the podcast features audio plays that were previously released by The Dunshelm Players (
KMRAmDRam) - with which both Martins are heavily involved. In response to criticisms of the potentially harsh way the hosts had spoken of certain teams, Martin O created an exclusive audio play - A Trial of Two Martins - in which the hosts faced a courtroom made up entirely of Dungeoneers they had been accused of unfairly maligning. The play featured Dungeoneers Jason Karl (formally known as Julian Smith,
Team 10 of Series 2), Anthony Haigh (
Team 11 of Series 2) and Stuart Leatherland (
Team 8 of Series 2) - all of whom played themselves. An interview with Karl and Haigh was then posted to the podcast's Patreon feed.
At time of writing the podcast has just passed 7,000 individual listens with an estimated audience of 121. Whilst these numbers are pretty modest, Martin H says that "I'm pretty confident that we'll see it through to the end. As long as we're keeping at least one person entertained, that's good enough for me."
